Peter Zezel RIP

Back in the 80's, all the girls who rocked Flyers charm necklaces loved Peter Zezel. Besides having great hair and a small role in Youngblood, Zezel was a pretty good player. Back in the day I pretty much dismissed him outright as a pretty boy, but I was wrong: Zezel was a solid two way player who won plenty of face-offs.

Some highlights from Peter's career can be found in this fan video. Here Ron Dugay and Peter fight over who has the best hair in hockey. And Rich Hoffman reminisces about Peter Zezel and the late 80's Flyers.

Good job Phillies

Since every true sports fan hates the Yankees (along with Dallass and the Lakers) it was good to see the Phillies go up to the house that little league built and take 2 of 3. Should have been a sweep, but oh well. Lidge can't save they all! Ho ho.

What is a Melky?

To the loser goes the spoils

Lower division teams happily embracing blowout beatings from Division I powers for the sake of a buck is a time-honored tradition in college football. But it usually doesn't require the forfeiture of another game.

Delaware State will play Michigan this season, but has to forfeit a previously scheduled conference game against North Carolina A&T. So they're already 0-1 for 2009 and, looking ahead to their trip to The Big House, probably 0-2. Del State ain't no Appalachian State, afterall.

I don't know how much Del State will make off this deal (or what pride is worth), but I'd like to see how that money ends up getting spent.

NOTE: I see the simmering Delaware and Del State football rivalry will be renewed this season after 30-some years. As such, the following would also have been accepted for post headline — "He hates these (blue helmets with yellow stripes)! Stay away from the (blue helmets with yellow stripes)!"

Now a new way for Eagles fans to suffer...

... as betting on NFC championship games will soon be legal in Delaware. For some reason the Delaware State Supreme court will decide if straight bets are allowed or if it is parlays only. Despite the complaints they are making, Delaware's casinos (aka 50 slots machines under the grandstand at the State Fairgrounds) will benefit from this law as it allows for table games. The article is unclear as to whether say, Dover Downs, could just pay the $4 million dollars for a sports betting licensing fee. Predictably, hypocrites "Trump" New Jersey and the "injury report" NFL filed lawsuits to block the law. In other dissenting opinions, YoUDee is gonna hate this new law:
The two dissenting votes came from Sens. Colin Bonini, R-Dover South, and George Bunting, D-Bethany Beach. Bonini said he voted against the bill partially because of the warning from the NCAA that Delaware colleges and universities would no longer be permitted to host postseason games at home.

"It punishes athletes who are innocent victims," Bonini said.

I miss the Phantoms already ...

Luckily my desire to spend money on minor sports will be satiated by the Chester soccer team, the Wilmington Blue Rocks and, of course, the Delaware Valley's entry into the Lingerie Football League. Apparently the LFL is NOT a beer marketing campaign. The Philadelphia Passion will actually be taking the field at Trenton's Sovereign Bank Arena.
The Lingerie Football League (or ‘LFL’) will be the most spectacular reality sports phenomenon creating a high-energy atmosphere of 7-on-7 tackle football played by some of the countries most beautiful and athletic women on Friday nights at major arenas and stadiums. Thousands of fans will arrive early to take part in the all-day mega-tailgate party leading up to kickoff of ‘LFL, Friday Night Football’. The LFL will deliver the ultimate fan experience being on-top of the action in a Friday night party setting, delivering the truest form of Fantasy Football….”
But will you be able to bet on these games in Delaware? More information on the LFL here.
