BONUS ANALYSIS: As we've seen this season it's not so much which team will show up (although they screw up a bunch too), but which Andy Reid will show up -- the idiot one or the sensible one. What worries me is Reid has the perfect excuse to repeat his insane Bengals and Redskins play calling performances against the Vikings because they have the top rated run defense in the league. But I watched a bunch of the Giants and Vikings game last week and the Giants were able to run the ball for 135 yards without Jacobs, with their backups playing the second half, and with nothing to play for. So the Eagles should also be able to run the ball so I don't want to hear any excuses later.

From the defense we should expect the same effort we've gotten the last couple weeks. The Vikings need big plays to score points and probably won't be able to sustain any long drives. All Minnesota really has is Adrian Peterson. Don't worry about him getting 5 yards here and 7 yards there, worry about him getting 50 yards here and 70 yards there. If you remember back to the regular season game last year, the Eagles limited him to 70 yards on 20 carries and no touchdowns. So Johnson will probably try and do what he did then along with confusing the hell out of Tavaris Jackson, who is hopefully this year's Shawn King.

BONUS QUESTION: Will any home team win on wildcard weekend?

December 28, 2008

Dallass really sucks

So the rollercoaster ride continues with a great, decisive, crushing 44-6 win over hated Dallass, who sucks. But to be honest, the Eagles really don't deserve to be in the playoffs and should consider themselves the luckiest team in the world. How Tampa Bay lost at home to the Raiders despite being up by 10 points in the 4th quarter is unbelievable, but it happened. The Bears also blew a 10 point lead against Houston. Everything out of the Eagles hands this season went their way. And even when they did their best to blow it, the football gods were there, willing the Eagles into the playoffs. That never happens, but it did. It was even 65 degrees on December 28th so it was an odd, unbelievable day all around.

And then in the actual game, everything also bounced right for the Eagles. Everything. They even got some calls from the refs. Sheldon Brown actually picked one off, Pacman's stupid unnecessary roughing on Brown, the interference call on Newman that probably should have been let go, Pacman Jones strip and Akers turns that into a 50 yarder before half, Romo's fumble bounced on one hop perfectly to Clemons for a TD return, Dawkins strip of Barber stayed in bounds perfectly instead of rolling out, and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting.

It's a Christmas miracle!

Other notes:
  • Congratulations to Andy Reid for running TWO STRAIGHT QB sneaks from the 1 yard line and scoring a TD. Who could have ever predicted that would work?
  • But I knew this game was really in the bag when Akers actually hit the 50 yarder before half instead of getting it blocked and returned for a TD.
  • I thought Aikman jinxed Akers with his cliche comment, "Akers was hitting them from 60 in pregame."
  • Big Play Buckhalter got more touches than 2 and look what happens. Who could have predicted?
  • How about the free agent signing of Clemons by Reid? It finally paid dividends in game 16.
  • I think the Cowboys probably wish Pacman was still in jail or suspended instead of on the field getting burnt, picking up personal fouls, fumbling kick-offs and booting trick plays on kick-offs.
  • Stand out Eagles - Buckhalter, Dawkins, Clemons, Celek, Hanson.
  • Great game direction by Fox for a change - shots of Romo staggering to his feet like an old man getting out of a chair, shot of the ref throwing the intentional grounding flag in Romo's face, shots of Wade Phillips in shocked disbelief, and lots of shots of Jerry Jones. The only thing missing was shots of a Romo frowny face girlfriend that has become a holiday tradition. Why wasn't Jessica at the game?
  • For color commentary there's Aikman and then theres the rest, whatever their names are.
  • So does this game finally make the national media shut up about the "greatness" of Tony Romo?
  • Why is Westbrook still in the game when it's 44-3?
  • Eagles still looked poor running the ball in short yardage at times this game.
  • Jeff Laurie should stay in the press box and not immitate Jerry Jones' sideline routine, unless he was doing it to shove it in his face.
  • Hi gu-UYS! I didn't actually make this peet-ZAH. It's from Pizza Hut!
  • Ha ha Dallass and all your fraud, front running fans. All of you suck.
Watching Minnesota today in an ugly looking, dull, indoor game I think the Eagles can beat them and Tavaris Jackson, but expect the usual 70%-30% pass to run ratio from Reid.

BONUS QUESTION #1: Who will drop more passes this game, franchise player LJ Smith or best free agent available, Asante Samuels?

BONUS QUESTION #2: Who is playing their last game as an Eagle?

December 21, 2008

Same ol' crap

I really don't have to write anything for this pathetic game, I've already written it all before. Terrible effort, idiotic game plan, horrible offensive balance, lots of drops, bad throws, defense blowing opportunities, etc. etc. etc. And the last play of the game was completely symbolic of the entire season. Reggie Brown catches it at the 1/2 yard line, time expires, Eagles lose. How many times have the Eagles needed 1 lousy yard to win a game this year? Also a bonus, if they had the timeout they blew earlier in the half, they could have had 1 more play. And the best part about this travesty? They still have a chance to make the playoffs so we can suffer 1 more week.

Other notes:
  • Here is my list of people that lost this game in order of responsibility:
    1. Andy Reid - 2 starting receivers are out, wind is blowing furiously, it's December, so lets pass 50+ times to 15 runs.
    2. DeSean Jackson - killer drop in the endzone of McNabb's best pass of the season.
    3. Asante Samuels - killer drop on an easy interception because he was probably thinking of his TD celebration instead of catching it first.
    4. McNabb for fumbling the ball because as usual he held it too long and was oblivious to backside pressure.
    5. LJ Smith - bad drops and a killer missed block that could have gotten Westbrook into the endzone or at least the first down.
    6. Idiot Andy Reid, because he passes every play in the 4th quarter but then brilliantly decides to run the shotgun draw at the time in the game where the clock is completely against them. How did that work out?
  • Although the defense held Washington to only 10 points, they didn't make any plays and constantly gave up third and longs and surrendered field position.
  • Washington's punter, whoever he is, was the player of the game.
  • Can you believe the Eagles had their destiny in their hands and then blew it?
  • Eagles don't deserve to be in the playoffs.
At least Dallass still sucks.

BONUS QUESTION: How come it's seemingly not a big deal or a media circus when Clinton Portis rips his coach?

December 15, 2008

The Cleveland Clowns

The Eagles won 30-10 and beat the spread. Yea! But the Eagles offense from last year and earlier this season returned -- up and down the field until the red zone and then it died, pathetically. When the Browns were still trying (if you could call it that), the Eagles first 6 possessions resulted in 6 trips to the red zone, but only 16 points. Fortunately they were playing the Browns, who really suck and haven't scored an offensive TD since McCain was running for president. So the Eagles were able to cruise to an easy victory, especially after the Browns totally gave up.

Other notes:
  • This game was boring.
  • Today is the 40th anniversary of throwing snowballs at Santa Claus. Wear it as a badge of honor. Strangely, ESPN, who has a network rule to bring it up whenever the chance presents itself, even during pro bowling broadcasts, overlooked it.
  • McNabb was actually great this game but he still can't make the little toss to the flat so a running back can run under it. Oh well.
  • DeSean Jackson had a decent game but most impressive was his catch down the seam to the 8 yard line when he got popped good. Not so impressive was his pass interception that followed 3 plays later.
  • Why is Reid calling trick plays against the Browns?
  • Asante Samuels is an idiot for doing the DeSean Jackson move at the 1 yard line but at least he realized it and grabbed the ball in the endzone. It took ESPN about 10 replays before they noticed it.
  • Sure, only 9 seconds were left, but why are you throwing it from the half yard line?
  • Good hustle by Westbrook to save the pick six. He made a better effort this time than he did vs. the Ravens where he imitated a kicker trying to tackle. But it still took the better hustle by Baskett and Celek to force McDonald out of bounds.
  • Either McDonald or Edwards were the best Browns.
  • Bradley seems to have gotten better as the season has progressed and probably had his best game of the year. His hits stood out and he even got an interception.
  • Dawkins set the record for most games played by and Eagle (181) and had a good game to go with his achievement.
  • Kolb looked totally wasted in that sideline shot or he was falling asleep standing up. Probably explains his performance when he got in the game during garbage time.
  • The shotgun draw play to Westbrook is the new quick pass to the wide receiver in the flat of season's past. You'll see it about 3 times a game, the defense knows the play, and it'll lose a yard most times.
  • Avant had his best game of the year.
  • Took until 2:30 left in the game for a shot of a dude with no shirt in the stands. Although it wasn't really cold so the guy is a poseur.
  • I still feel sorry for the Browns.
Will Minnesota beat Atlanta?

Good times

Awesome:
A couple talk show hosts on WFAN in New York asked Cole Hamels today if he thought the Mets were choke artists.

He said they were because, well, they were choke artists the last two years.
(...)
One of the show's hosts apparently gave Hamels a chance to back away from his comments.

He didn't.

"For the past two years they've been choke artists," Hamels said.
Awesome squared:
Dallas Cowboys star receiver Terrell Owens is unhappy with quarterback Tony Romo and tight end Jason Witten, believing the two conspire to create plays that leave him out, ESPN reported Thursday, citing several unnamed Cowboys sources.
Dallass and the Mets suck.

BONUS QUESTION: Does anyone else ever feel sorry for Cleveland Browns fans like I do?

December 8, 2008

The season still lives

(Sorry this is late. Had no power from 2:15 till almost 1am yesterday. How did people survive before electricity? It was so boring.)

This game was pretty much an exact reversal of the Eagles vs. Giants game that was played in Philadelphia just a couple weeks ago. This time the Eagles dominated both lines of scrimmage and controlled the game, the Eagles ran the ball down the Giants throats, the Eagles were dominant in time of possession, the Eagles had a tight end that made big plays, and the Eagles had the shut down defense that made the opponent's offense look pathetic on 4th and short..

Of course this all occurred because Andy Reid, who is probably still an idiot, decided to stick with the run the ENTIRE game, despite it being a "failure" early - but keep running those end arounds! The last two convincing wins happened because Reid did what every pundit and knowlegeable fan has called for over and over and over and over again till infinity - run the ball more and balance the offensive play calling. And by successfully doing exactly that, not just against the weak Arizona Cardinals, but against the Giants, the current champions and probably the best team in football, just shows that Reid's pathetic reasoning of "we saw on film the Bengals were weak on pass coverage so we thought we'd throw it 80 times" is complete idiocy. If you can do it against the Giants you should be able to do it against everyone and should have been doing it the ENTIRE season, not just when it's 30 degrees out with wind gusts of 40 mph. There's a reason the Eagles are the most frustrating team in the world. They can even piss you off when they win.

Other notes:
  • Please, no more end arounds and reverses.
  • Did anyone else notice after Hixon's horrible drop, on the Eagles sidelines in the background was healthy scratch Reggie Brown clapping and laughing it up?
  • These refs were terrible all game but it didn't end up costing the Eagles. Except...
  • On the blocked field goal that was returned for a touchdown Akers was clearly blocked in the back.
  • Have you ever seen an NFL game that had 3 blocked field goals?
  • To me one of the biggest moments of the game was the first 3rd down conversion on the Eagles opening 2nd half drive. Blow that and Rocca comes in and boots a 20 yarder into the wind and the Giants are sitting pretty and building on their momentum.
  • I don't think Rocca had a punt after the first quarter.
  • LJ finally had a good game catching and even running after the catch but he still holds the ball like an idiot and blew a ton of blocks.
  • Wouldn't it be nice if we could have had a replay showing what happened to Kevin Curtis?
  • Eagles blew a fumble recovery they totally should have made, but worse was the botched Samuels/Dawkins interception.
  • Loved that Giants (#1 rushing team in the league) 4th and 1 call. Looks like Coughlin needs to go back and study the greats like Bill Parcells and Bill Walsh like Reid did to figure out you should run the ball there.
  • Did Reid outcoach Coughlin or was it Coughlin just really, really dumb?
  • The Fox announcers, especially "Goose," were worse than usual.
  • 2 games in a row McNabb scrambled at just the right time for first downs. So in his 10th year he's not only learned to throw the ball away, but in the 12th and 13th game of his 10th year he's also learned to take the 5-6 yards that the defense is giving him to move the chains and maintain possession of the ball instead of going for a 15-20 yard pass downfield.
  • In the 2 games vs. the Giants this year McNabb didn't get sacked. Last year it was 15 or so.
  • Westbrook was outgaining the Giants offense by himself until that last garbage time drive.
Is there a real reason to get excited?

BONUS QUESTION: How many Giants need to shoot themselves to give the Eagles a chance to win?

November 28, 2008

Winner, winner turkey dinner

Call me a Negadelphia cynic, but this game is just a mirage. The Cardinals are frauds, their only quality win was against Dallass, who sucks, and they were in a bad position as a team - short week after a confidence crushing loss, on the road, West Coast to East Coast, etc. and played as bad as they probably have all season, especially in the first quarter.

Warner had a McNabb-esque start throwing 2 horrible interceptions on the Cardinals first two possessions and his receivers, especially Bolden, did their best imitation of the Eagles receivers by dropping a ton of very catchable passes. And the Cardinals defense, which isn't that good to begin with, was equally as bad. Bad coverage, bad tackling, and they even let the Eagles convert several times on third and short with running plays. Now that's bad. And to top it off they even fell for the shovel pass. Somehow they missed that tendency.

I'm reluctant to give McNabb that much credit either. The pressure is off because the season is all but mathematically over and just like last season, suddenly he has the most complete game of the year. Only this time it comes at Thanksgiving instead of late December. But to be fair, the offense executed really well and had very few penalites, nobody dropped any passes, they scored points every quarter, McNabb was pretty much on the money, there were no wasted timeouts, and most importantly there was a BALANCED attack and holy crap, that turned out to be a winner! Nobody could have predicted.

Other notes:
  • For my money, the play of the game was by Eckel, who has been on the practice squad all year, taking the handoff and converting on 3rd and 1 with a 2 yard run on the first drive drive of the game. This set everything in motion. The mock cheer with a standing ovation was the cherry on top.
  • The runner up play of the game was Hanson picking off Warner's 3rd pass. Another thing that hasn't been happening recently. This fueled the Eagles momentum.
  • Notice the Westbrook run where Tra Thomas was standing there all alone with nobody at all to block? Good defense there.
  • Refs gave the Cardinals their first TD with that bogus holding call on Hanson.
  • Should I be impressed the Eagles once again drove for points at the end of the first half? It's almost a trend now.
  • Akers kickoff to start the second half barely made it to the 18. Weak.
  • Mikell had a really good game and several nice hits including one on Bolden that apparently brought back some very bad memories and made him forget how to catch.
  • Despite the offensive success, there were still very few significant yards after the catch until the mid third quarter when things started going a little better.
  • Lito was terrible. He had coverage on all 3 Cardinal TDs and gave up that long 40 yarder to Fitzgerald as well. I wonder what his trade value is now.
  • LJ Smith broke a tackle! Things are definitely going the Eagles way this game.
  • How come on intentional grounding calls there always has to be a referee conference to decide if it's a penalty or not?
  • Worst series of the game for the Eagles came after the Cardinals had just made it a 14 point game. First play a pass and a 20 yard loss because of intentional grounding call. Second play, 2 yard pass that Avant takes out of bounds to stop the clock again. Third play, semi-successful screen. So to staunch the Cardinals momentum the Eagles produced a 3 and out that lost yards and took a minimal amount of time off the clock. Andy Reid is still an idiot.
  • Bolden had a terrible game - lots of drops and a crushing fumble that allowed the Eagles to "seal the deal" after the Cardinals had gained some momentum. Look for idiots like Eskin to try and score some kind of points because we all know 1 bad game means he sucks and the Eagles were right to not pursue him.
Am I wrong, or is there a reason for hope?

BONUS QUESTION: How will Reid Reid it up this week?

November 23, 2008

Quoth the Ravens, "Eagles suck."

Once upon a gridiron dreary, while I watched, weak and weary,
Over many a dumb and curious play call thinking what for,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a mention,
And then the question, "How does this team get off the floor?.
"'Tis no mystery," I muttered, "show McNabb and Reid the door -
Only this, and nothing LESS."
Yeah, that was terrible, but it's still way better than the Eagles.

Reid has lost it and has lost the team. He's pretty much Hitler in his bunker as WW2 was coming to its end and instead of doing the right thing - surrendering- he refuses to admit defeat and instead has decided to take everyone down with him and will destroy this team.

After McNabb's horrible interception to Ed Reed I jokingly said, "Put Kolb in to start the second half." I had no idea Reid would actually do it especially since the Eagles were only losing by 3. But Reid is panicky, he's erratic and irrational, he's making even less sense than usual. Last week it was the insane pass to run ratio and the desperation gadget plays followed up by nonsensical claims in his press conferences. I can't wait to see what he does on Thanksgiving knowing the game is keeping him from a giant table of food waiting to be drowned in gravy.

I don't feel like recapping anything else so onto...

Other notes:
  • Fox was horrible with the replays all damn game. Was Klecko down when he fumbled? How did Bunkley get hurt? What was the 15 yard penalty on the Eagles bench? How about showing that Ed Reed did not lateral the ball forward? There are a dozen examples.
  • Another week, no turnovers. Although the Eagles had chances.
  • "Donovan McNabb can handle no huddle no problem!" Then right on cue, delay of game. McNabb can't do anything "no problem" these days.
  • On the 3rd and 1 long bomb to Jackson that was an interception, Westbrook was wide open in the flat.
  • Lucky for the Ravens Buckhalter got hurt otherwise they'd have suffered a heavy dose of Buckyball I heard. He would have had 3 touches.
  • Moron McNabb throws a horrible pass which is picked off by Ed Reed who then moronically LATERALS the ball BACKWARDS to an unsuspecting teammate who then knocked the ball forward which prompted the moron refs to blow the call as a forward pass which then moron Reid failed to challenge thus giving the Ravens a TD. Fox announcers are clueless. Nice job all around. Everyone, take a bow.
  • How come I know you can't challenge the stopping of forward progress but Andy Reid, who sits on the rules committee, does not?
  • Fall on the damn ball Abiamiri. So stupid. You know that fumble recovery might have changed the outcome of this game? Eagles would have had the ball in position to score. Instead not recovering sets up the blocked Rocca punt.
  • These refs were terrible. Holding on one of the Eagles ends on almost every pass play and no call. Then they call one on Runyan that wasn't even close.
  • Nice blocking on the punt that was blocked.
  • If you QB sneak on 1 play and make half a yard, why would you pass on the next play from 6 inches out? Oh yeah, Andy Reid is a complete and total idiot.
  • Did you notice LJ Smith chased Ed Reed the entire length of the field? That's why he was franchised.
  • How come the Ravens defensive backs have better hands than the Eagles receivers?
  • Sheldon Brown had a real bad game.
  • New worst ad - McDonalds R&B joint. Looking forward to the T-Pain remix though.
The Andy Reid era is over?

The Dumbest Ever!!!

One knucklehead on the bench, the other still with the headsets. This game, the second half, was all about the future, and after a very nice drive down the field with plenty of time on the clock, AR calls for a pass play by newb Kolb???? Freakin' retarded. Was he really a QB coach for a SB team? I admire Favre for developing DESPITE Reid.

No other game summary necessary. Sorry, Ron. Just retarded. #5 and AR need to get the heck out of town!!!!

ZZZZZZZ

Wow. This game was so bad and boring with both teams playing so poorly it would have been a shame if somebody had to go home with a win. A rare display of fairness by the football gods. And another thing to thank them for: we were blessed with a bonus 15 minutes of suck. Of course the refs did their part to contribute to the horrible with a brutally bad roughing the passer call on Sheldon Brown late in OT that almost gave the Bengals the victory. But Cincinnati showed why they have only 1 win and missed the makable game winning field goal.

The McNabb led offense was brutal at the start of the game as usual, but remained so throughout all 75 minutes of play. Here is the entire output of the first quarter:
  • Badly thrown swing pass to Westbrook to start. Who could have predicted.
  • Wide receiver screen for 0 yards.
  • Curtis is open but McNabb misses him badly.
  • Punt.
  • Next series starts with a 1 yard run.
  • 5 yard bad pass and drop by Celek.
  • Bad pass to Avant followed by the pathetic "please throw a flag Mr. referee" hand motion from McNabb and Avant.
  • Punt.
  • 4 yard Westbrook run
  • 1 yard run.
  • McNabb starts running and once again fails to put the ball away and predictably fumbles, Bengals recover on the 1.
What made the offense even more pathetic all day were the gadget plays. Flea flicker failure, end around failure, "wildcat" formation failure - in overtime? The gimmicks were done in desperation. They were not part of any game plan or strategy and they predictably failed. Writing this I just found myself sighing unconsciously again. That seems to be the lone emotion this team arouses in me anymore.

The defense was decent I suppose, but didn't make any game changing plays and did give up a TD with under 2 minutes to go in the first half, their one lapse in the game. The special teams were ok but Rocca's terrible punts in the 4th quarter and overtime were pushing it. Akers did make a 42 yard field goal into the wind which was a positive.

Coaching? Andy Reid has got to go.

Other notes:
  • First good play of the game for McNabb came at 9:08 of the second quarter - a 17 yard pass to Jackson for a first down.
  • Believe it or not, this game could have actually been worse, but the "saved by zero" commercials were strangely absent.
  • Bad roughing the passer call on Cole.
  • Runyan's hustle saved 4 points against on McNabb's fumble.
  • Samuels blew an interception he should have had.
  • Buckhalter had the 1 really nice play of the first half and then back to the bench.
  • Just have to laugh at the 3rd and 1 failures. It's all you can do at this point.
  • Did they ever say what happened with the guy taken off the field on the stretcher?
  • The Fox robot had a leaf blower today. I hate leaf blowers.
Season is over.

BONUS QUESTION: Can Andy Reid take his game to the next level and find a way to lose to the Bengals?

November 10, 2008

Once again, same old crap from the most frustrating team in the world

Once again the Eagles need a yard or two late in a game. Once again they have a couple of shots. Once again they run it despite having almost no success running it all game. Once again they FAIL miserably, not even gaining a yard. Once again they lose another incredibly frustrating game. Once again, pathetic.

And of course, once again Reid takes responsibilty. But what does that mean? Are there any consequences? No, none at all. So who cares if you take responsiblity, Reid. It means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. So shut up or fire yourself.

Ok, back to the game. Giants did what I thought they'd do – run the ball down the Eagles throat with ease. On the majority of runs, whoever it was, but it was mostly Jacobs, the back wasn't even getting touched by an Eagles defender until he had already gained 5-7 yards. It was ridiculous. Yet somehow the Eagles (thanks to capitalizing on turnovers) were still in the game till the end despite being dominated. And man, I wish the Eagles offense was like the Giants. It would be so satisfying to run the ball for huge chunks of yardage at will. A 6 yard run up the gut is so much better for your football soul than a 6 yard DeSean Jackson end around and scoot out of bounds or a slant pass to whoever. It also has the added benefit of being a strategy that wins football games, especially in the playoffs and crunch time, something Reid will never ever learn.

While the Eagles run defense was horrid, the Eagles offense did way better than I thought they would. Well except for the dismal end of game failure that they've pulled repeatedly in recent history. If the Eagles could run short yardage or goal line, their season wouldn't be over. But the offense did put up 31 points, took advantage of turnovers with touchdowns, and even did well in the redzone for a change, but just couldn't get it done with the game on the line.

Now to the refs, I agree with the replay overturning Manning's over the line of scrimmage penalty. But on the Giants next drive, Jacobs CLEARLY fumbled the ball before crossing the goal line on the Giants final TD. How the replay official blew that is beyond me. That call gave the Giants 7 points when they should have had none. And Bradley, on one of his rare tackles, did not grab Jacobs by the facemask as called. That blown call gave the Giants a first down and ultimately led to a field goal.

But in the end, despite playing poorly but scratching and clawing enough to be in position to steal the game, the Eagles didn't deserve to win. The Giants crushed the Eagles on both lines of scrimmage, and as the cliche goes, that's where games are won and in the Eagles case, lost.

Other notes:
  • Lucky, but great play by Patterson on his interception.
  • Memo to Jim Johnson: Dawkins should not be isolated on a wide receiver, especially the #1 receiver.
  • Plexiglass had 1 catch, his TD.
  • What's this position #38 on the Giants plays? Full-back? What a great, innovative idea by the Giants. Eagles should steal that. Since the NFL is a copycat league I predict other teams get a Full-back too.
  • Eagles had a total of 5 offensive plays for 12 yards in the first quarter but also a TD. This foreshadowed the time of possession for the entire game - 39:10 for the Giants to 20:50 for the Eagles.
  • I was impressed by the Manning pass to Boss for the TD. Can McNabb make that pass? Could any Eagles TE catch it?
  • The Gocong hit to cause the fumble is why we watch football.
  • Terrible "up for grabs" interception before the half by McNabb that gave the Giants a FG. But then after the kickoff he took the Eagles down the field with around a minute left for a field goal of their own. This inconsistency is another source of frustration, like McNabb's horrible starts and finishes of games.
  • Wow, Buckhalter got the ball a couple times and did good. Then back to the bench.
  • Westbrook only had 26 yards rushing. Giants had 217.
  • What was Baskett's best catch this week, his touchdown or his fiance?
  • McNabb did not get sacked this game.
  • Why is Greg Lewis still on this team? Stank Daniels as well with another idiot play.
  • Reid's first challenge was imbecilic, reeked of desperation, and stupidly wasted a timeout. The next challenge was legitimate, but on that one he got jobbed.
  • Memo to McNabb and Reid: YOU HAVE TO GET A PLAY OFF BEFORE THE 2 MINUTE WARNING. Especially since you only have 1 timeout left. Instead they just stood around and didn't even try. Pathetic.
  • Time to admit these linebackers suck – can't tackle and can't cover tight ends.
  • Looks like the small defensive line philosophy is another patented Reid failure.
  • Reid and McNabb are good, but aren't going to win a Super Bowl. Neither of them have it, whatever "it" is, so they gotta go.
Who gets the most blame for this loss and is the season over?

BONUS QUESTION: How many catches will Pro Bowl talent LJ Smith have?

You know if Andy Reid ran the Phillies Adam Eaton would have stayed in the rotation and Joe Blanton would still be in Oakland.

A.I. Yo!

Allen Iverson is back in the Eastern Conference. And while I still have visions of Brad Lidge sliders and Chase Utley speech highlights dancing in my head, I can definitely see the Sixers and Pistons matching up again in the playoffs.

Last year didn't work out so well though the Sixers held their own as a young squad entering playoff waters for the first time. But their personnel is better this year, and I think the team will improve as the season goes along, provided our own A.I. can figure out his role on the court.

According to this column, the Iverson/Billups trade is as much designed to stage Detriot for a LeBron James landing, but I think the shakeup will help the Pistons this year too. And as they may be out of Detroit after this season, Iverson and Rasheed Wallace might be that more motivated to win this year. Should be interesting.

Oh, the post title is a reference to The Wire. If you haven't seen it, get on that, gump.

A victory

Much like last week, the Eagles were horrible to start the game, especially McNabb. And Reid called the usual overwhelming number of pass plays to runs. The play that finally got the Eagles rolling was a 44 yard catch and run by the player of the game, Brent Celek (6 catches, 131 yards), which came a few plays after McNabb's first completion and the Eagles first, first down. Unfortunately McNabb threw a horrible pick in the endzone the next play. But the engine had warmed up and the Eagles scored a TD on their next drive and took control of the game and continued to score on almost every drive thereafter.

Aside from Seattle's very first play of the game - a 90 yard TD pass play - the defense shut down Seattle and barely let them cross midfield. Seattle kept shooting themselves in the foot with stupidity, drops, and dumb play calls. You can see where Reid learned it from.

Akers had a great game making all his field goals and even one from 40.

Other notes:
  • Way to break away from the Titans-Packers OT game, Fox as the Titans were lining up for the winning field goal for 3 straight minutes of ads. Idiots.
  • Nice replay on opening kickoff return, Fox. Idiots.
  • Will McNabb ever learn to put the ball away when he's running the ball? That was the first of 2 Eagles fumbles that luckily rolled out of bounds.
  • Seattle's first play, a 90 yard TD pass, was all Lito's fault.
  • Celek had more big plays this one game than LJ has had the last 2 years.
  • Franchise Herremans?
  • Fox robot was looking very patriotic today, but got schooled by the Burger King.
  • Awesome groin injury graphic.
  • Eagles once again failed to convert a 3rd and 1 but were able to finally convert a 4th and short for the first time this year.
  • Remember when Julius Jones sucked on Dallass? He sucks on Seattle too.
  • Darren Howard played pretty good today.
  • Eagles ALMOST had ZERO penalties - way to blow it Bradley on the 2nd to last play of the game. Guess who they played last year that they did have zero penalties against?
  • I hate the Burger King commercials with the faux folk singers.
  • I hate the Toyota "saved by zero" commercials.
So the Eagles deserved to win this game, but had a big assist from the Seahawks ineptitude and plethora of injuries to key players. Next will be a real opponent, who just destroyed the pathetic, no heart Dallass, who sucks.

While Mets fans were at work

We had a championship parade.

Philadelphia Phillies Championship Parade looking down Broad Street

Got on the R3 in Elwyn which is the beginning/end of the line figuring space would be at a premium on the train and it was. The Elwyn stop filled the seats, the Media stop filled the aisles, and from there the train didn't stop again until 30th Street. Got off at Suburban Station and made my way across Market down 16th and then cut over to Broad via Chestnut and took up a space in the crowd around 10 AM.

me at the paradeYou can see me in this picture standing on Broad in front of "fye." to the left of the traffic light pole. I'm wearing a maroon Phillies winter hat on top of my Flyers baseball cap, holding up my camera toward city hall taking one of many parade pictures, the best of which you can view in my championship parade set at flickr.

Highlights of the wait were a dude in a Phillies hat driving a seafood delivery truck stopping in the middle of Broad, opening his door and standing up pumping his fist while laying on his horn. The crowd, ready to cheer anything, roared until a cop told him to get going. The guy was so happy. Also a kid rode a wheelie on his BMX for the entire block until he lost it and then got booed. Lowlights were latecomers trying to weasel their way in closer.

Eventually the parade started. Oddly, Burrell was the leadoff man and was all alone on some faux Budweiser beer thing with his wife, dog, and 2 dudes pretending to be horse drivers. The rest of the players were randomly mixed on floats and were overwhelmed in numbers by people that nobody knew. I never even saw a bunch of players or Charlie Manuel in his gangster suit because they stood on the other side of the flatbeds. Oh well.

There were cheers, pictures and video shot, and then after 15-20 minutes or so the parade was gone. Most people then wanted to leave so they could take a whiz after a morning of steady drinking, but where I was nothing was moving. After about 10 minutes the cops opened the barricades and people flooded onto Broad Street and then the fan's parade began.

I walked down Broad Street as far as Washington, mainly hovering around this marching band style drum section that was playing some celebratory beats. One beat made a guy literally get stupid as he hopped onto the back of a police paddy wagon and started to bounce to the beat which made cops rush out out of the van and throw him in the back of it. I booed the cops while others mindlessly cheered. The cops didn't have to arrest the guy, just tell him he was stupid. Other than that, the cops I saw were cool. They were mainly hanging out and talking, not trying to be tough guys or busy bodies.

Eventually I made it back to center city and the Market East station to catch my train back home. The platform for trains going north was packed and there were long lines just waiting to get onto the platform. For my train there was nothing but just waiting for it to show up at its regular time. So when it came I hopped on it, rode back to Elwyn, and got back to my car around 3:30 just in time to surprisingly hear that the ceremony at the stadium was just starting. So I bought a cheese hoagie on my way home, flipped on the TV, poured a Coke and enjoyed my lunch while watching the ceremony and the raising of the 2008 championship pennant. What could be more perfect ending to a great day than that?

Here are some other Flickr sets of the parade I found that are worth viewing:

Typical

I kind of feel that calling the game was a reprieve for the Phillies. After Utley blew for the 1000 zillionth time another great opportunity to get 1 lousy hit with guys on base I felt the wheels were starting to come off. And when Rollins booted the BJ Upton grounder I knew he was going to be the tying run. I even have witnesses! Anyway, you could see the usual disaster starting to happen again. You could see it all slipping away like a ball out of Rollins hand.

Just like the Buccaneers game everything was lined up and people were talking like they already won. Then they jumped out to a very reminiscent early lead and it looked like it was going to be a cakewalk, just like the Eagles game. On WIP during the game, Jason Martinez, Mike Kern, and a caller were even talking about who they could get in the offseason so they could repeat.

I will never be convinced until the last out or the last second has ticked off the clock. Until then, it will still be will we ever win.

Other notes: MLB sucks. Was there anyone that didn't know this rain storm was going to happen since about noon? And it's going to be 38 with windchills in the 20s tomorrow and I bet they try and force the last 3 and half innings in anyway.

Also, even though the Phillies technically would have won if they called the game after 5 or the Rays didn't tie in the top of the 6th, that would be totally cheap, bogus and pathetic way to win. Not that I think they would have done that.

1 more win

Blanton blasts a homer

Impressive game all around. Blanton becomes the first starting pitcher with a stupid beard to get a win. And how about that home run? The umps continued their streak of at least 1 terrible call a game, but this time it was in our favor. Congratulations to Feliz, who in game 4 became the first Phillie to get a hit with a guy on third, and with 2 outs even. Rollins is now wide awake. Howard is now wide awake. Pat Burrell though is still sound asleep. Am I going to have to call him out typographically too?

The only thing that makes me nervous is that everything seems too perfect and people are acting like they already won.

October 26, 2008

10-0

We are living in an alternate universe. A Philadelphia team is in position to win a championship, there could be a black president, and the Eagles were the beneficiaries of brutally bad refereeing that gave them the game. You knew the Falcon player didn't touch the ball because the guy that downed it didn't immediately start running for a TD like they all do even though you can't advance a muff.

So in the end the Eagles deserved to win this game and also didn't deserve to win. They controlled the majority of play but at the same time pathetically could not score a TD (yet again) from the 3 yard line on 3 plays and could not get 3 yards on 2 plays to get a first down when they were trying to run out the clock. Success on either series would have put the game away. But then came the undeserved muff call that handed them the victory which finally did.

This game started slow for the Eagles offense because of Andy Reid's usual stupidity. I'm sure he thought to himself during the bye, "Atlanta is expecting lots of Westbrook since he's had a bunch of time off and he's our best player so what I'll do instead, because I'm a football genius, is throw the ball 3x more than run it. They'll never expect that!" Of course Atlanta was expecting that, but did Reid adjust? No. He continued to throw, throw, throw despite the Falcons playing the pass and McNabb being erratic. Only late into the 2nd quarter when they started balancing the play calling out and getting Westbrook the ball did the offense finally start clicking. They even scored on 3 straight possessions and scored TDs both times inside the redzone.

The defense played ok throughout. They didn't allow a score on the opening drive of either half and stopped Atlanta from driving at the end of the first half for a 50 yard field goal. One breakdown on a big play gave Atlanta it's first touchdown and the predictable defensive letdown after the Eagles went up 20-7 gave them their second. The defense did keep points off the board with Lito's interception in the endzone which was a huge play.

Other notes:
  • Westbrook should have scored or at least gotten a lot more yardage on that reverse. It's like he fell asleep or something midrun.
  • Greg Lewis earned a couple dollars of his paycheck this week with his punt downing skillz.
  • Holy crap. McNabb scrambled! And got a first down! Who knew that could work? So many times McNabb could have run in this game, especially on the Falcons blitzes where the receivers were being covered man to man. Instead he stayed in the pocket and overthrew his receivers instead.
  • Holy crap! A QB draw! And it got a touchdown! Who knew that could work?
  • Max Jean Gilles gets his helmet ripped off and he stops playing and casually bends down to pick it up all while the play is still going on. Nice job.
  • How nice was it that it was the Eagles for a change driving down the field right before the half to kick a fieldgoal?
  • How did they give LJ Smith a first down on that 1st and 20 play in the drive to start the 3rd quarter? That was his best play of the year by the way.
  • Stupid DeSean Jackson and his stupid -13 yard punt return could have been a turning point in the game. Eagles offense went nowhere from their own 3 and Atlanta got great field position after the punt and first and goal after a Lito interference. Fortunately Lito then picked it off in the endzone.
  • The refs did not have a good game.
Go Phils.

It's not really the gold standard of breakfasts, but it's not too bad for a Cheerios knock-off. The Swoop fun facts were mildly entertaining, much like the 2008 version of the Eagles.

Game isn't close to being over, although it's 11pm, and who knows, maybe he'll get a hit before 2am. Maybe Ruiz can give him some tips.

Update: My reverse hex worked or Ruiz read this blog in the dugout on his iPhone and gave Howard some tips. Either way you can thank me and discuss game 3 in the comments.

Nineteen Eighty

The Phillies improbable run to this years World Series has me searching the recesses of my mind for memories of their last (and only) World Championship. I was 10 years old in 1980 and was really into Legos and sports. Because I was so young my memories are both hazy and filtered through the mind of a child. However I do recall that 1980 was a particularly good year to be a young Philadelphia sports fan.

The Flyers went 35 straight games without losing, making the Stanley Cup finals before falling to the Islanders thanks in part to Leon Stickle. I distinctly remember watching the final game at a distant relatives home on the Chesapeake Bay, and being so angry when the telecast repeatedly replayed Stickle’s blown call. However the greatest hockey memory of 1980 was the most fantastic sporting event that I have ever, or will ever, witness in my lifetime: the miracle on ice at Lake Placid. This was like the greatest shit ever, a bunch of American nobodies beating the mighty Russians. I was a total nervous wreck throughout the game; I was literally shaking during the third period. I remember my brother and I just going bananas when Al Michaels counted down the last seconds. We ran through the house and went outside where we beat on pots and pans. In reality the game was played hours earlier, but luckily my radio station of choice was “hot hits” WCAU and not the all news KYW. So I was sure I was watching the miracle in real time.

The Sixers also went to the finals in 1980, losing to the Lakers. Because of players like Bird, McHale, Kareem, Magic, and strangely, Kurt Rambis, it was during this time period that my hate for both the Lakers and Celtics was birthed, hate which has continued unabated for nearly 30 years.

Like any red blooded American 10-year-old boy I collected baseball cards. This meant anytime my Mom or Dad gave me a dollar for doing some chores, I rushed off to Rogers News Agency and bought three packs of Topps trading cards. The baseball cards helped to familiarize me with all the ball players. I also remember that you could get Phillies baseball cards at Burger King with the purchase of French Fries, so I would often try to cajole one of my parents into taking me there for a Whaler and baseball cards. One time my brother and I ate about five packs of french fries each at the Burger King across from Cottman Golf in a desperate attempt to complete our card collections.

As far as the 1980 Phillies, I really liked Gary Maddox and Bake McBride because I thought their hairstyles were awesome. I disliked Nino Espinosa, which I probably picked up from my father, who grumbled every time this dude came in to pitch. I also supported Keith Moreland over Bob Boone, who I thought was old and boring. As for Schmidt and Carlton and Rose, the big stars, I was like whatever. The Bull, Greg Luzinski had the taint of Frank Rizzo upon him. No matter what he does in his life, he is forever stuck in the 1970’s misplaying that ball against the Dodgers. Like the Dodge Dart, the Evening Bulletin and those Fishtown row homes with the wood paneling and drop ceilings, Luzinski (and his tinted cop sun glasses) is a symbol of the decaying Rizzo Philadelphia. I thought this was just my own theory, but apparently some Villanova professor wrote an entire book based upon this phenomenon.

I distinctly remember some crucial moments during the closing portion of the 1980 season (particularly the series in Montreal that sealed the division win). I recall bits and pieces of the National League Championship series against Houston and their garish uniforms . I remember a disputed double, or was it a triple, play where the Astros’ fielder had clearly trapped the ball, and how unhittable Nolan Ryan seemed to be. After the NLCS, the World Series was almost anticlimactic, especially since Royals' star George Brett had hemorrhoids. There were lots of signs at the Vet mocking Brett and his butt. It was cold that October and all the players wore satin jackets in the dugout. I remember Dan Quisenberry and his sidearm delivery, and Willie Wilson striking out all the time. I definitely remember when Boone dropped the foul pop and Rose caught it. That moment remains the single time I have ever felt that a Philadelphia sports team was truly destined to win. The day after the final game people were so stoked about the victory, just driving around cheering and beeping their horns. Some dudes spray painted Phillies 1980 World Champs on a wall that my school bus passed. It remained there for years.

Well...

The game isn't over yet, but I'm going to say it's over and I need to get a good night's sleep for a change. So gripe away in the gripes.

From ESPN:
punching holes in the wall

There's no more wall left, dude.

1 down, 3 to go

Utley hits 2 run homer

Should have had more than 3 runs (13 guys left in scoring position), but hey, they won anyway. The obvious first star of the game was Hamels, although he wasn't in top form. Second star was Utley for giving the Phillies the early 2-0 lead (2 for 4, 2 stolen bases) and his defense, and third star was Ruiz for a ground out that ended up scoring Victorino for the winning run. But hey, at least Ruiz got his bat on the ball with someone in scoring position unlike Rollins, Howard, and Burrell who pretty much sucked. Honorable mentions go to Madson and Lidge.

First chump of the game was BJ Upton. Loved those double play ground balls chump, but I really loved the hustle. Runners-up: Backstreet Boys.

Anyone have any faith in Myers on the road and in Florida?

BONUS QUESTION: How long is Westbrook going to last?

October 19, 2008

Crazy Stuff

Two things: 1) Do we want the Rays to win? I mean, it's hard to say I *WANT* the defending champions IF they pull off the comeback, but how much of a confidence boost is it to the Rays if they win and move on? Overall, I fear on paper the talent on BOS much less, especially their pitching. It just feels odd to say that I want to play Boston at this point. Ah, either way, at least we can lose to either hometown in style AGAIN - unless things keep rolling for the Phils the way they seemed to have so far these playoffs - destiny, regardless? 2) Why do coaches call that STOOPID timeout when the opposing team has to kick a FG in crunch time against the clock? I finished my workout at the Y, watched the first kick, and laughed, then left. Got in the car and when I pulled in my neighborhood, was updated that OAK/NYJ were in overtime. Say, what? Turns out, for another week (ref: PHX/DAL last week), the team with the clock / time on their side calls a last second timeout so that the opposing kicker can get a practice kick in (miss too), and come back, set up with less pressure and stress, and do it all over again after finding the range, etc.... Am I the only one bugged by this behavior? I mean, sure, if it's a tie game with seconds left or in overtime and the other team calls the time out first OR is going to kick on 2nd or 3rd down or something, then great, call your "icing" timeout, but these last two scenarios are STOOPID. How often does icing really work anyway? I'd like to see that stat, discounting these dumb scenarios when the kicker is HELPED by having some extra time to not rush.

He's One of Us!

Give it a read, and then hope the guy can drop a W for us this round! Perhaps also, the Bosox can continue to stir up trouble and force the Rays to pitch an ace on Sunday, unavailable for Wednesday!

Um...

When are the Flyers going to win a game?

First game excuse - Rangers already had played 3 real games and Flyers weren't ready at the start.

Second game excuse - Just didn't play the first 5 minutes of the third period, but other than that...

Third game excuse - It was on the road, lost in overtime, they never win in Pittsburgh anyway but good effort.

Fourth game excuse - Flyers suck?

Lets go Phils

Wow. Something went exactly the way it was supposed to. It was even easy. I'm not really sure how to act.

Phillies win

Winning the pennant is nice, now you have to win it all.

October 14, 2008

Pedal to the metal!

The most frustrating team in the world does it again. Roy Williams was available but the Eagles didn't get him. But guess who did? Dallass. A team that already has a #1 went for it again, giving up a 1st, 3rd and a 6th round pick. Sure that's alot, but that's what you do when you ACTUALLY WANT TO WIN THE SUPER BOWL instead of just talking about it. Oh, we all know how valuable 1st round picks are, that's why the Eagles traded out of the first round the last 2 years passing on some really good players that would have filled their needs. And third rounders, they're like gold, that's why the Eagles cut 3rd round bust, Tony Hunt today. I also wonder what the Eagles wouldn't give up to get Tony Gonzalez.

Onto another joke, the NFL itself. So Pacman Jones breaks his "zero tolerance" probation and is suspended "at least" 4 games. And the Cowboys and Jerry Jones appeared to try to cover it up and don't get punished at all. Funny definition of zero tolerance Roger Goodell.

Matt Stairs?

Matt Stairs full moonshot

Eat it Buck and McCarver. They were so depressed that the Dodgers lost. I don't know what was the sweeter sound, the disappointment in their voices or the crickets in Dodger Stadium. Then the post game tools talked about how Torre blew the game by taking out Kuo instead of how the Phillies won it and of course that means Manuel outmanaged their hero, Torre. Ha ha.

Is Victorino this team's Pete Rose but with power? Post season leader in RBIs with 11 and the guy that has definitely been the spark for this team in the post season.

Little things are going the Phillies way and Victorino's odd golf swing homerun that barely cleared the wall to tie and Stairs super clutch pinch hit 2 run homer for the win is just the latest. Hell, Rollins even got a hit to lead off the game that ended up being a run. When does that ever happen? My memory is hazy, but I remember the 80 team coming back from the dead vs. Houston in the NLCS a couple times with the help of Del Unser pinch hit homeruns. And they're also overcoming terrible mistakes like Howard's awful, awful throw with Utley's great individual double play. Huge.

So the Phillies SHOULD wrap it up on Wednesday with their ace, Hamels, pitching, but of course being a Philadelphia team...

October 12, 2008

Phillies ruin a perfectly good day

Moyers pitched batting practice and the Phillies bats were anemic. I guess that outcome was fairly predictable. And while I am far from a baseball expert, I really have no idea how Moyers gets over at all with his weak stuff, but maybe the regular season with its ordinary teams and lineups full of scrubs and hacks are filled with easy outs. Let's hope Blanton and Hamels and, if necessary, Myers can get the job done and we don't see Moyers on the mound for a game 7.

A win is a win I guess

Watching the 49ers last couple of offensive series was like watching the Andy Reid led Eagles. Instead of sticking with their strength and what worked all game - running Gore, short drops, and throwing quick passes and screens, they suddenly decided to throw the ball downfield, run end arounds, and all sorts of other stupidity. But it's not suprising, Mike Martz thinks he invented the game and is smarter than everybody else just like Reid.

So in the end, the team that sucked more lost to the team that just merely sucked. Yeah, the final score made it look like a dominating victory, but if the Eagles were actually a good team they never would have been down by 9 points to the 49ers and this game wouldn't have still been in doubt with 2 minutes to go. How many times did the Eagles get inside the 10 and go nowhere in 3 plays and had to trot out Shakers? And until the 49ers started to get dumb, the defense was once again giving up big runs and big plays and unable to get off the field.

I watched this game like I'd watch an Eagles preseason game - with limited emotion and interest. So when the Eagles started losing the game in the second quarter I didn't get angry. When the defense gave up another 50+ yard field goal before the end of the half, eh. When Akers got his 54 yard attempt blocked and returned for a TD to end the half, oh well. When the defense laid down and died to start the second half, it's pretty much what I expected. When they turned it around in the 4th with 23 unanswered points and ended up winning it was nice, but not the usual feeling I would get from a victory. The Eagles and Reid and McNabb have lost me for now even though they managed not to lose the today's game.

Other notes:
  • Fitting that the Eagles started the game with a drop since they lead the league.
  • Defense gave up a score on the opponents first possession of the game, but it wasn't their fault this time.
  • 49ers defense should be pretty embarrassed. They let the Eagles run the ball on them successfully in short yardage inside the 5 once.
  • Watching the 49ers run screen after screen successfully, sometimes with the same call 2 plays in a row, reminded me of the Patriots shredding the Eagles defense in the second half of the Super Bowl.
  • I hadn't heard Trent Cole's name since the last time he idiotically jumped offsides in a game.
  • Well, who could have guessed the defense would give up a 50+ yard field goal right before the end of the half? Fourth time this year.
  • Who could have guessed a 50+ yard field goal attempt by the Eagles would turn out bad? But to be fair that would have been blocked from 20 since the guy that blocked it came right up the middle untouched.
  • Fitting that the Eagles started the second half with a drop since they lead the league.
  • Booker sucks. Just like I said back in the preseason.
  • By the way, Dawkins is still old and slow just like he's been since last year. Just because he made a play in the Pittsburgh game doesn't change those facts.
  • Funny that Takeo Spikes was finally able to hang onto a ball thrown right into his hands. Nice pass McNabb, he didn't even have to move. LJ sucks, but it was McNabb's fault.
  • Akers "good" field goal I thought was no good. I think if it was low enough it would have hit the upright yet again. That's when things started going the Eagles way in this game and the 49ers started getting stupid like challenging the kick and bringing their high suck factor to the fore.
  • Juqua Parker is the player of the 4th quarter, Buckhalter the consistently good player of the game.
  • And how sweet was that bonus Dallass loss? It made me happier than the Eagles win. Dallass sucks.
With the Washington and Dallass loss, do the Eagles have new hope?

October 10, 2008

Up 2-0 and goin' back to Cali

Stylin', profilin', dialin', and smilin', while in the sun.

So the Phillies did what they needed to do in Philadelphia beating Lowe who is supposed to be some October wunderkind but looked like a sweat factory to me, and Billingsley, the Dodger's supposed ace who couldn't get Brett Myers out. So now they go back to LA where they were swept in 4 games earlier this year. Hopefully they figure out not to pitch a strike to Ramirez with guys on base and they can come home to Philadelphia with the pennant and a trip the the World Series and not more games to play.

Their Annoying Mindset

A decent short read that touches on the arrogantly high self-view the Eagles have of themselves, while looking at last off-season's moves. You know, that persistent Gold Standard self-proclaimed proclamation, which has now become all the more annoying, not only because it's been "five" years and there is no championship, but because they continue to think and believe they're really the best out there. It was annoying enough when it all started some 15 yrs ago under Laurie, but much moreso now with two back to back last place seasons and several weak personnel moves during the same time.

Oh well, there's always next year... or the year after?

Pat the Bat, 0 for everything until today. 2 crucial homeruns? Where did that come from? And Blanton is now 5-0 for the Phillies and they won this series with almost no production from the 2 superstars, Utley and Howard. And all of Manuel's moves were the right ones. Is it possible they have "it" this year, whatever "it" is?

Will they win the NLCS?

Andy Reid sucks. And is really, really fat.

By the middle of the second quarter I knew this game was lost. I knew then that the offense would be lucky to score another point and it was just a matter of time for the Redskins to take the lead and keep it permanently. What, you think Andy Reid would out coach a rookie and make better second half adjustments and the Eagles would regain control of the game?

Good one.

The offense had a great first drive and a half then basically nothing for the rest of the entire game. Nothing but a Brown catch and run when the Redskins stupidly failed to touch him down when he was laying on the ground. Then laughably, once again the Eagles couldn't gain a yard once inside the 5.

The wet, green tissue paper defense actually managed to prevent the opposition from scoring points on its first drive of the game but then got pushed around like a bunch of little girls the rest of the game. They made no plays at all, no stops, no nothing. They were completely outplayed and manhandled.

So calls for Andy Reid's firing should resume in earnest. The theory that he got fat (figuratively, not literally in this case) on a weak NFC East for all those years gains credence with each passing season. Of course he never won anything during those years. The Giants have won a Super Bowl since, Dallass is probably next or maybe even the Redskins. The Eagles, a big fat zero like their big fat coach. Against talent and good coaching "suddenly" Reid loses far more than he wins. Also notice, even though down 14-0, Zorn continued to run the ball and stick with the game plan. So by the end of the game the Eagles defensive line wouldn't have even been able to stop an Eagles' offensive goal line running play.

Other notes:
  • Although the block was stupid and totally unnecessary, it still was a legitimate block in the back by sTank Daniels and I don't understand why the refs picked up the flag. I guess sometimes they can suck in our favor once.
  • Akers can't make crap from over 40, and especially from 50. The Eagles fans know it, fans of other teams know it, everyone knows it. Everyone but the idiot Andy Reid. And of course the Redskins took that miss, the short field and the momentum and went down the field and scored their first points. It was the turning point of the game. That or the Greg Lewis drop the play before that set up Aker's miss.
  • Can Rocca learn to kick field goals? Sure he'll be mediocre this year but next year...
  • Pathetic effort by the offense before the half after getting the ball on the 40. But how else are you going to allow the defense to allow the opposition to kick a 50 yard FG right before the half for the third time this year?
  • Are the Coors Lite commercials among the worst of all-time?
  • Nice challenge Reid. Damn, you're stupid. It's like you did it just to piss off the fans even more.
  • I got nothing to say about the effort at the 3 yard line.
  • I got nothing to say about the defense allowing the Redskins to eat up the last 7:12 of the game.
  • Unlike the Eagles previous losses, the Redskins deserved to win and kicked the Eagles collective ass.
  • Redskins have all their remaining NFC East games at home.
The season is already over?

No sweep 'til

New park, new result, and a new set of rules according to the umps. Or at least a bizarre, very bad call.

The Phils just had no offense Saturday until it was too late to matter, and that was the story. With the dome closed in Milwaukee, those notorious Citizen Bank Park winds could not mess with the Brewers and they ended up fielding most of what the Phillies sent toward them.

Unable to figure out Brewers starter Dave Bush, the Phils made a little more headway against the shaky Milwaukee bullpen, but not enough. So they'll play Sunday. The Phillies have had good success against Milwaukee starter Jeff Suppan, so let's hope they step it up and finish out this series before it gets nervous.

Oh, that bad call. With the bases loaded in the ninth, Feliz hits into a double play, with Howard scoring from third and Dobbs moving up to third base. Victorino, running toward second, decided not to slide at all. And while there's no rule stating you have to slide, and Victorino proceeded directly into second as opposed to well to the side,
the ump called interference. Brewers manager Dale Sveum then pointed something out to the umps — I guess that Howard and Dobbs hadn't crossed the next base yet — and they proceeded to call back Howard and Dobbs to third and second.

Now, this ended up not meaning anything as Ruiz subsequently grounded to the pitcher to end the game, but it was still a terrible call as far as I'm concerned. But whatever.

On to Sunday.

Flyin' Hawaiian leaves Californian mourninin'

Victorino smiles as he rounds the basesIn the second inning Victorino hit the first ever Phillies post-season grand slam and thats all the Phillies needed to win. They should have scored alot more than 5 but they stranded about 50 dudes. Myers sucked in the first inning but was bailed out by Brewers goat, Corey Hart, who hit a double play ball back to the mound when the bases were loaded. From there Myers was good and even had a crucial 10 pitch at bat that ultimately resulted in a walk, shook up Sabathia, and ultimately helped lead to Victorino's grand slam.

Should they break out the brooms?

Other notes: Is Larry Anderson the most unprofessional broadcaster in history or is it just me? I listened to this game on the radio, but have also heard cuts, and his, "YEAH!!!! YEEEEAAAHHH!!!" cheering in the booth is total amateur hour. He was rooting Victorino's slam over the wall - "C'MON!!!........ YEAH!!" - like a fan in the stands or watching at home. High school announcers have more composure and professionalism.

Must win

BONUS ANALYSIS: Maybe calling game 5 a must win is hyperbole, but check out the rest of the NFC East's next 6 games:

Dallass: Bengals, Cardinals, Rams, Buccaneers, Giants, BYE
Giants: Seahawks, Browns, 49ers, Steelers, Dallass, Eagles
Redskins: Eagles, Rams, Browns, Lions, Steelers, BYE

Looks like lots of wins there except for the NFC East opponents. And this makes the loss to the Bears all that more horrible. Also it is the second game they should have won this season but found a way to lose instead. So they must win vs. the Redskins.

Did you know "Gerbil Dad" is an anagram for "Brad Lidge"?

I was hoping ANAGRAM 3000 would return something like "Mitch 2.0," but I guess not.

Lidge celebrates his 35th pitch

The original Mitch Williams, not the 2008 wannabe, was on the radio saying while he was watching Lidge almost blow the game on Saturday, he was incredibly anxious and freaking out and now understood why everyone hated him. Lidge pitched 35 pitches in a shaky 9th inning. Hamels only pitched 100 in the previous 8 masterful innings. Should Manuel have left Hamels in to finish the game? Did he bring in Lidge in a relatively safe situation to try and restore his playoff pitching confidence since the reason he is now a Phillie is because of his choking in Houston?

Oh yeah, the game... the Phillies did a nice job being opportunistic in winning game 1, 3-1, their first postseason victory since game 5 of the World Series on October 21, 1993.

Pathetic

Despite 4 sacks and 4 turnovers, the Eagles still managed to lose this game. McNabb's winning streak at Chicago is over and the Eagles losing streak in prime time continues. Eagles are now in a must win game next week vs. Washington to keep pace with the NFC East.

Both sides of the ball took turns losing this game. In the first half, the Eagles lost the field position battle and the all-star secondary was burnt repeatedly for TDs. DeSean Jackson's punt return fumble didn't help the cause either. In the second, the field position situation reversed but the offense couldn't take advantage, dropping the ball repeatedly and failing miserably in the red zone. They had the ball twice inside the 5 and only got 3 points. And if you can't score a TD from the 2 (or 1) on 3 tries you deserve to lose. The offense puts up the points in the first half every game and then almost nothing in the second. You can blame Reid who always gets outcoached with the halftime adjustments. And let's not forget Shakers, who can't make anything over 40 yards anymore.

I'm sure the Eagles will try and excuse the loss by saying they would have won with Westbrook. Well, they should have won without him, but they blew it. This game felt a lot like a game from last year.

Other notes:
  • It's good to know when LJ goes out the Eagles can just plug in the backups and theres no discernible difference.
  • As usual, first drive of the game and the defense gives up points.
  • Great pass on the TD to Jackson.
  • McNabb really didn't throw a bad pass until he threw that one behind Reggie Brown late in the first.
  • Can Darren Howard play tight end? Nice catch on his interception.
  • Kudos to Michaels for not saying, "Akers was making them from 60 in warm-ups." But then again he probably wasn't making them from 60 in warm-ups.
  • Should have gone for it on 4th and 1 anyway instead of try a 50 yard FG.
  • How fat is Madden's thumb?
  • Am I the only one that thinks that spot on third down right before the 2 minute warning was terrible and gave Chicago a first down?
  • Orton fumbled that before the end of the half. He lost the ball, it popped up in the air, and then he pushed it forward on the follow through.
  • Madden and Michaels didn't mention the Cubs until the start of the third quarter. Must be because baseball is on Fox.
  • Kudos to Quintin Mikell, who unlike every moron in the NFL, took a knee in the endzone instead of running out and getting tackled at the 4.
  • Good thing Reid passed on Felix Jones because he already had Booker in house.
  • I can't believe the end around worked 3x in this game.
  • McNabb didn't even make a move once to run with the ball.
  • Is everyone as shocked as me regarding the fumbles? Eagles keep getting almost everything the other team puts on the ground.
  • How about a QB sneak from the 1 yard line?
  • How about a real fullback on the team?
  • Hey Schoebel, how about blocking someone on 4th and goal, like maybe #96? Great job. Would LJ have made that play?
  • All game the defense stuffed Forte except of course on 3rd and 6 and the game on the line.
At least Dallass and the Mets lost too.

Repeat NL East Champs

Phillies are once again NL East Champs, this year after 161 games instead of 162. (They're improving!) But I was pretty sure Lidge was going to blow his first save of the season because that would be the Philadelphia way. And he almost did, doing a Mitch Williams impression as he allowed a run and loaded the bases before Rollins saved the day with a great diving play to start the game winning 6-4-3 double play and a region wide exhalation. Rollins acknowledged the drama in his post game Fox interview by remarking, "It wouldn't be the Philly way if it was easy."

No, it wouldn't.

BONUS QUESTION: How many times during the broadcast will it be mentioned that McNabb is from Chicago?

September 21, 2008

Green Curtain

When was the last time the Eagles defensively dominated the other team so thoroughly? 1991? And how satisfying was it to watch? Makes me wish I had a Tivo so I could watch it again. For the day the defense had 9 sacks, 2 forced fumbles AND they recovered both of them, 1 great interception, a safety, allowed only 2 of 13 third downs conversions, only 180 total yards given up and most importantly only 33 net yards rushing with 6 attempts resulting in losses. By refusing the Steelers any yards running the ball, the Eagles forced them to throw it 32 times and the Steelers obviously suck at that, especially the part that involves pass blocking. And aside from the usual first drive and last drive before the half where they always give up points, the defense was pretty much perfect. But where was this last week?

The offense could have given us more this game. They should have had more points in the first half and those turnovers were what kept the score close, but I'll let them slide considering Westbrook went out and McNabb was hurt as well. But at the same time they did nothing at all in the second half except not blow the game which I guess is an accomplishment. Lucky that Steeler didn't pick that pass to Baskett around the 20 yard line. It could have been an entirely different result to the game if he did and we'd be ripping McNabb again this week.

Other notes:
  • I don't like Tony Hunt and think he's mediocre, but I can't blame him for fumbling the ball since he got speared in the side of the head.
  • CBS, instead of advertising for some NFL show on Showtime that nobody is going to watch, how about explaining the defensive delay of game call.
  • Have I ever mentioned that along with end arounds, reverses, and double reverses, I also hate flea flickers? I'm always shocked when any of these plays are successful against pro defenses.
  • Has Buckhalter ever looked this quick? Not just on his TD run, but how about how quick he got upfield on the screen in the first and some of his other runs?
  • In case you've forgotten, LJ Smith sucks, but how about a good replay CBS on the attempted TD pass? Was it actually catchable?
  • Trent Cole gave Pittsburgh 2 first downs via penalties but made up for it with pressure and sacks.
  • Great interception by Samuels.
  • For Kolb's first pass of the game, why would you throw it to LJ Smith? Little John is 5 million dollars of QB kryptonite.
  • On the saftey, does it count when the refs get a call right by accident? 2 wrongs in this case do make a right.
  • The refs other blown call was not calling Roethlisberger for another intentional grounding when he launched the ball into the sidelines after Gaither blew that sack. Was he outside the tackles? No.
  • It looked like the first play the offense ran after the Dawkins forced fumble was the play McNabb botched the handoff on last week.
  • Nice punts by Rocca when it mattered.
  • Continue to praise the defense in the comments.
Weapon X!

Weapon X sacks shitty roethlisberger

BONUS QUESTION: Which was the stupidest move of the Cowboys game, DeSean Jackson's showboating idiocy or McNabb taking that last sack instead of throwing it into the stands?

Cowboys fans are idiots

Typical

But atypically the Eagles defense was frustrating this game, not the offense. In fact, the defense pretty much sucks. But when the pressure was really on, McNabb got tight (as usual) and started panicking (as usual) and then he also had the usual brain freeze to top it all off. THROW IT AWAY YOU IDIOT. TWICE! 10 frickin' years in the league and he still doesn't have a clue. How many times have I written it in this stupid blog? Can't he read? And then the hook and ladder/lateral at the end of the game? Are you kidding me?

The last 3 minutes of the game RUINED the previous 57 because of the complete stupidity of the Eagles and McNabb. Up until then I wasn't even going to be angry if they lost because the offense played so well for the most part and was dominant, but this team and Andy Reid are the most frustrating team in history and they found a way to piss me off anyway. The Eagles snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

So the end of the game sucked and the crucial McNabb mix-up on the Westbrook handoff was horrible, but if you look at the game in total the Eagles really blew this game in the first half. They had 3 field goals where they should have had at least 2 touchdowns. The first case being the DeSean Jackson fumble on the first drive that was recovered in the endzone for a touchdown that Reid didn't challenge. What was he afraid of, wasting a timeout? Then right before the half the Eagles screwed around trying to run out the clock instead of being aggressive and going for a touchdown. And what good was it anyway because the defense gave the field goal right back in 40 seconds? Other big first half loser moments was the 72 yard bomb to TO and the 98 yard kick-off return for a TD. The Eagles should have been up by at least 20 instead of 6 at halftime.

Other notes:
  • Dallass sucks.
  • How many third and longs did the defense give up? Where was the vaunted blitz and the rush? What's up with only 4 guys rushing?
  • The defense gave up the traditional first possession of the game touchdown.
  • In case you had forgotten, Considine sucks.
  • Why wasn't Lito on TO the entire first half? TO disappeared in the second.
  • Kick-off coverage sucks.
  • How much do the refs suck?
    • Westbrook tackled out of bounds, no call.
    • Blowing play dead for unabated to the QB when the guy was laying on the ground. Should have been a free play.
    • Obvious to even the blind Westbrook facemask non-call.
    • Asante Samuels facemask after his interception non-call.
    • Greg Lewis drawing an interference call when it should have been on him.
    • DeSean Jackson showboat fumble they blew.
    • Marion Barber fumble? How about a replay ESPN?
    • False start and then unsportsmanlike on Trent Cole for reacting to it? Are you nuts?
  • I didn't care about all the Mexicans until I realized they're all Cowboys fans. Deport now and build that damn wall.
  • How good was that super slow motion replay of Romo fumbling the ball in the endzone, picking it up, getting hit, fumbling it again and watching Gocong finally recovering it for a TD?
  • DeSean Jackson, you're an asshole. So lucky the refs weren't paying attention.
  • LJ Smith sucks.
  • Speaking of M.I.A., where was Yoko Romo?
  • I will say the Eagles did have a pretty good run defense, but i thought the pass defense was supposed to be a strength.
  • In case you stopped hating Tony Kornheiser, his asslicking soliloquy on the Cowboys should have reignited it. But he just did it to needle Philadelphia. More importantly though he's a terrible announcer. Dude, just shut up.
  • Sadly, Dawkins doesn't really have it any more. He just doesn't look slow, he is slow. Quentin Mikell should get more time
  • I've always hated reverses and end arounds.
  • Nobody can cover Witten, the only guy on the Cowboys I respect.
  • How important was it that Shawn Andrews went out near the end of the game?
So if I was a dispassionate observer, this was a great football game to cap off a great NFL weekend, but I'm not so I really can't take any real enjoyment from it. Sad, I know. The Eagles had this game but blew it. Sigh. I'll never get used to it.
