Fears

Despite Kotite as new head coach (no one knew any better then) I remember 1991, the year of much promise. Then Cunningham went down in the opener with a knee injury for the rest of the year. But the Eagles had the best defense ever so backup Jim McMahon was able to lead them to a 3-1 record. Then he got hurt. But who can forget Pat Ryan and Ken O'brien? Despite the worst quarterbacking in football history the Eagles still went 10-6 but failed to make the playoffs. They did it on the backs of the defense. The defense finished the season ranked #1 in the NFL in terms of fewest yards allowed overall, vs. the run, and vs. the pass. In addition, the Eagles' defense led the NFL in sacks and fumble recoveries and tied for the league lead in takeaways. This despite numerous 3 and outs, turnovers, and utter ineptness from the offense. Kotite got the head coaching job because the year before the offense led the NFL in rushing (2,556) and time of possession (33:19) and the NFC in scoring (396) and TD passes (34). But with Cunningham down that all went down the drain.

If only they had a modicum of competency at quarterback that year, if only Cunningham didn't get hurt, who knows? Randall Cunningham was certainly better than Trent Dilfer and look what happened in Baltimore. Sigh...

So that brings me to this year, another year of promise - the greatest year of promise. Dawkins has already been banged up, Owens groin is acting up, and Kearse sprained his ankle today. None the injuries are said to be serious, but why do I fear they're just hints of what to come? Why do I fear history is going to repeat itself (despite knowing it all too well)?
